“
If I had known
how wonderful
it would be to have
grandchildren, I’d
have had them first.”

How-to Be Helpful class is designed to help grandparents-
to-be learn what’s new in baby care and how they can
help support the new parents. The class covers the basics
of newborn care, including information on today’s more
absorbent disposable diapers and the trend of swaddling
your child to sleep.
“
I came because I’m finally going to be a grandma,”
gushes Theresa Austin. “I wanted to learn all the
new things there are.”
Many grandparents are interested in addressing
safety concerns for their new grandchildren.
New Grandparents 101: How-To Be Helpful
covers current guidelines for car seats and
vaccinations, as well as information about babies
sleeping on their backs to prevent sudden infant
death syndrome (SIDS).
The next New Grandparents 101 class is
on Jan. 24, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at the Health
Education Center, SE 92nd Avenue and
E Mill Plain Boulevard.
BECOM I NG A GRANDPAR ENT I S ONE OF THE
most wonderful transitions you can experience as an adult.
You get to enjoy all of the delight, the love, and the fun of a
baby without the responsibility of being the parent.
With that in mind, grandparents still make the best
babysitters and buddies for the new family addition, and
the best support team for the new parents.
When you’re getting ready to
welcome your first (or fifth or
14
th) grandchild into the world,
it is a good idea to be prepared.
A baby is a baby, you might
think, but many things have
changed in the years since
you diapered, fed and cared
for your own children.
